TEN BAD DATES WITH DE NIRO: A BOOK OF ALTERNATIVE MOVIE LISTS Ed Richard Kelly (Faber, £12.99)Let's face it, we love lists. They're the fodder of pub conversations and arguments. History choice

Endgame, 1945 David Stafford (Little Brown, £20) Peace often comes at a huge price, and the devastated landscape of the end of the Second World War saw a thousand tales of retribution and survival. As a microcosm of the war's terrible human suffering, Stafford offers a mosaic of nine lives caught up in the period from Hitler's birthday to the Potsdam Conference. The critical three months, far from saving Europe from Nazi tyranny, brought its own catalogue of horror, with the BBC depiction of Buchenwald as its gates opened to reveal the chilling nightmare of the emaciated and the doomed. Here were freedom fighters and British SOE agents lucky to be alive, but also children like "little old men with yellow faces and sunken cheeks". Fay von Hessel, daughter of one of the executed 1944 plotters, relentlessly searches for her lost children. And there was revenge against the SS - "take them out and shoot them". Death was always in the shadow of truce.  more...

Dance

Dance queen

Next week English National Ballet bring their new work The Snow Queen to the New Theatre. Our dance critic f=Swis721 Blk BT DAVID BELLAN talked to its choreographer Michael Corder Michael Corder says the starting point for his ballet The Snow Queen, based on Hans Christian Andersen's story, was his love of the music - The Stone Flower by Prokofiev. How arms sales cost lives

Oxfam began life back in 1942 in a bid to relieve the plight of wartime civilians. Now, 65 years on, Oxford's most famous charity has discovered that conflict in Africa is costing that continent a sum equal to all the money it receives in international aid. It is hardly rocket science, therefore, to work out that whoever is selling arms on the continent, and thereby taking money that could otherwise be spent on relieving poverty, should be controlled.  more...

Gardening

Divide and conquer

VAL BOURNE revives the traditional art of dividing perennial clump-formers I have been busy moving plants from a holding bed in order to make way for new paths in one of the vegetable patches. They had made large clumps, particularly the summer-flowering geraniums and astrantias. Rather shockingly the central heart of each plant was a dry, peaty ball, probably due to last summer's drought. This dead centre must effect the vigour of the plant so I've been pulling these vast clumps apart and discarding the dry centres and keeping the new vigorous outer pieces. I must have potted up 30 small pieces from each clump into soil-based John Innes. Next year I should have lots of young plants and these will eventually be far more vigorous than the congested clumps that were already past their best.  more...
